In Snow Leopard it will be called "AppleScript Editor" and in all versions of OS X before snow leopard, it will be called "Script Editor". Once you have opened applescript, you should see a window similar to the one above -
As you can see, there are 5 buttons on top. The ones you need to know about are -
1. Compile - Compiles your script. Checks for errors and tells you whether or not it will work.
2. Run - Runs the script. Its useful to test the application and see whether its doing what you want it to.
3. Stop - Stops running the application.
