When you buy a Mac, you probably want to make sure you get your money's worth from your Mac. More importantly, you want to use it to its fullest. So here's the ten essential things to do after you buy your Mac (Don't worry, these won't make your wallet any lighter) -
1. The First would naturally be to transfer all your content from your old computer to your new Mac. I personally just transfer my stuff to a hard drive and then to the new Mac, but you can also use Mac's Migration Assistant. (Located in Applications --> Utilities)
iCal on Mac OS X Lion is an amazing and easy-to-use software on the Mac. It incorporates the stunning looks of its iPad equal with mind blowing simplicity and convenience.
The majority of Mac Users, including me, have never really used iCal on a day to day basis. Unfortunately, I simply do not have the time or patience to spend several minutes in simply setting a reminder or an alarm. The process which included naming the event, prioritizing it, setting a due date, duration for the event, an alarm, choosing an account and performing several other moronic tasks was far too time consuming and tedious for me to find useful.
But with some changes in Lion and a little digging around the app, I discovered the tricks of the trade ( or rather, tricks of the app ) -
We all know that there are flaws in an iPad, iPhone and iPod touch ( I'm just gonna call them iDevices from now on ) as there are in every product. Few, but still there. At least there were... before iOS 5. How many of these flaws can you name which are not related to software ? Seriously. That wasn't a rhetorical question. Reply in the comments
Maybe I'm mistaken but in my humble opinion, I think that their design and their hardware is almost perfect.
So getting to what you want to read, I'm going to list the top ten new features of iOS 5 ( I hope to come up with the complete list of over 200 features soon ) -
Notification Center - all your notifications in one easy convenient location
1. Notification center - Probably one of the best new features in this update, notification center is a single central location for all your notifications be it any application. Moreover, this scene can be brought up from any application, by simply swiping down from the top of the screen. These notifications will also be visible on your lock screen and you can swipe any one to take you to the app. The much needed feature finally brought into iOS 5.
News and Magazine stand can download in background
2. News Stand - With magazines and subscriptions becoming increasingly popular on iPad, Apple has decided to provide a singular location for all newspapers and magazines along with their subscriptions available to you right on your home screen. And what's more, this news stand allows background downloads so when you wake up in the morning, your morning's edition of the paper will already be downloaded on your iPad.
Reminders have location services
3. Reminders - Tired of all the sticky notes lying all over your house ? So is apple. This is the new reminders application unbuilt into iOS 5 complete with To Do's and some amazing features. One particular great feature is that you can set reminder's based on location. So for example your iPhone or iPad will detect that you have entered or left the house using location services and will remind you to pick up the groceries on your way out.
Split keyboard in iPad for thumb typers
4. Split Keyboard - The iPad's keyboard now splits up into two parts for the convenience of people who like to type with their thumbs.
Twitter is now integrated throughout the OS
5. Twitter integration - Twitter is now integrated throughout your device so you can now post a link or share a photo straight from the Safari or Photos app.
iOS 5 devices no longer need a PC to be activate
6. PC free - You can now set up your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch straight from the box with no need to connect it to your PC. Probably my favorite feature is the fact that now, your iDevice will wirelessly sync with your computer every time you put it into charging. Also software updates can now take place directly on your iDevice.
iMessages - Free text messaging from and to iPod Touch, iPhone and iPad
7. iMessages - You can now send text messages, photos, etc free of cost from your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad to any user of these devices. moreover you can also see when they are typing a message in response.
Safari in iOS 5 - Reader, Reading list
8. Safari - Safari, especially on iPad has taken a big leap forward. Safari now has a reader function which allows you to read the content on any formatted page free in a beautiful layout free from distractions and also allows you to change the font size of your reader content. Tabbed browsing in Safari on iPad.
