If you’re a new mac owner or switching to a mac, then these apps will make your life much easier -

1. Alfred – A beautiful search engine / productivity tool to change your life. It can search your mac, google, wikipedia, amazon, play songs, give commands to your mac like “sleep”, “shut down”, etc and is a lightweight application that looks absolutely stunning. 2. Pop Clip – iOS like copy, cut, paste, dictionary, search, email all with one handy click. See screenshots above.

3. VLC – All in one cross-platform media player. To date, I have never come across a media file that VLC cannot play. Amazing software. Unlimited Options. For Mac, Windows, Linux and iOS .

4. Vuze – BitTorrent downloader. Of all the various torrent downloaders I have used, Vuze is by far the best. Exceeding all capabilities, in a simply but beautifully designed cross-platform application, Vuze is simply brilliant. Transmission and Miro are other alternatives for bitTorrent downloaders.

5. MagicPrefs - Customize your Mac with countless gestures for your Magic Mouse / Trackpad meant to enhance their utility and change your life.

Change the Desktop Icons Size

Change the size of your desktop icons in a flash. Now this may seen obvious to all trackpad users who merely have to pinch in to increase and pinch out to decrease the size of the icons on their desktop. However for desktop users, the process is a little different.

1. Go to your desktop.
2. Right click and click "Show View Options" or simply press "Command-J"
3. Now change the icon sizes by dragging the slider left and right.

Mac OS X - Force Dock Magnification

Open an Application at Login / Startup

Right click on the Application's Icon in your Dock --> Options --> Open at login and Done. The application will now open the minute you switch on your mac. To disable auto open at login, do the same thing and

The keyboard shotcut to hide an application is Command-H. However, to hide all applications except the one you're currently using, just press Command-Option-H.

Turn on Magnification in Dock

To turn on Magnification in the Dock, Simply right-click on the seperator in the Dock, and click "Turn Magnification On". Alternative go to System Preferences --> Dock and Turn Magnification On.

Left Handed Mouse on Mac ?

Left handed ? Trouble using the mouse with your right ? No problem. Just go to System Preferences --> Mouse and change the "Secondary click" option from right to left. Piece of cake.

Create a Keyboard Shortcut on Mac

On OS X, you can create your own keyboard shortcut for any command which is on the menu. And by that, I mean literally on the menu. Simply open System preferences --> Keyboard --> Keyboard Shortcuts, choose the Application name, type the command and done.

The twitter application has a menubar icon on the right hand side of your menubar ( top of the screen ) from where you can directly go to the Timeline, Mentions, Messages or Post a new tweet. Also when the twitter app is active, you can right-click on any text in any application and there will be an option saying "tweet". Click that to tweet the selected text.

In Mac, you can get information such as File size, File Type, File Name, Folder Contents, Location on Mac, Date Created, Date Modified, Entension about any file / folder as well as other functions like locking the File / Folder, Making it Read only, etc.

So what's the long drawn complicated procedure for all this ?

Well, first you select the file and then press Command-I. Complicated, huh ? ( For the sarcasm impaired, you want to skip over that last part )

The Mac Tip Series 6 - Trash ( Recycle Bin )

Mac Switch #8 - Your Recycle Bin is now called the "Trash" and is to the extreme right of your Dock. To delete files, you can either right-click the file and click "Move to Trash" or you can simply drag it to the Trash icon in the Dock. Click on the trash icon to see what all is in it. Right-Click and then click empty to permenantly delete all the files in the trash. To eject an external Hard Drive, drag the HD from your Desktop to the trash can. It'll automatically change to an eject icon.
